Round 5 Recap: Outlaws win a thriller, Blues get first win
Five rounds into the Men’s competition and its tight at the top of the ladder. Following Saturday’s results, the Bushrangers Rebels leapfrogged Orange Tigers, whilst percentage separates 3rd and 5th. Meanwhile, in the Women’s competition, the GIANTS went one game clear, and all teams have an early season victory.
Parkes Panthers vs Cowra Blues, NorthParkes Oval:
Women’s – Parkes Panthers 1.7.13 def by Cowra Blues 3.2.20
The Blues held on to win a close encounter reversing the result from Round 1 and secure their first win of the season. Parkes’ inaccuracy in front of goal contributed to their downfall whilst the Blues defence held firm as the Panthers surged for the lead. For the Panthers, Korine Coleman and Kathryn Hetherington were named in the best, whilst Cowra were led by Tess Roberts and Jackie Kacarovski.
Orange Tigers vs Bathurst GIANTS, Waratah’s:
Women’s – Orange Tigers 0.1.1 def by Bathurst GIANTS 4.4.28
The conditions at Waratah’s meant that scoring would be challenging and early goals would be at a premium. The scoring certainly proved tough as only one goal separated the sides at half time. Hailee Provest starred for the GIANTS with three crucial goals whilst the Tigers struggled to get clean entries inside 50 to capitalise on their possession.
Men’s – Orange Tigers 3.5.23 def by Bathurst GIANTS 8.6.54
The men’s game was also a dour affair with the contested ball of utmost importance. The match had plenty of feeling but like the women’s game prior, not much scoring and at half time, the Tigers remained goalless. Neither side was able to dominate possession and two late third-quarter goals to Brendan Pike-Longley and Andrew Henry gave the Tigers momentum heading into the final quarter. The GIANTS kicked away in the last to come home 31 point victors. For the GIANTS, Paul Jenkins booted 3 goals and Shaun Noyen 2 whilst Andrew Henry finished with 2 for the Tigers.
Bathurst Bushrangers vs Parkes Panthers/Dubbo Demons, George Park #2:
Men’s – Bathurst Bushrangers Rebels 17.29.131 def Parkes Panthers 5.9.39
A 92-point win for the Rebels has pushed them into top spot after defeating Parkes Panthers on Saturday. Scott Brown returned from the NEAFL whilst Bill Watterson (4 goals) and Andrew James (2) did the damage from midfield. Best players were Panthers’ Brent Tucker and Rebels’ Harry Bowden.
Men’s – Bathurst Bushrangers Outlaws 9.14.68 def Dubbo Demons 9.12.66
A thriller in Bathurst capped off a great round of AFL Central West action with the Outlaws holding off the fast-finishing Demons. Alex Sparks and Bevan Charlton-White continued their strong form with 3 and 4 goals apiece. The third-quarter set up the win for the Outlaws who turned a 14 point deficit into a 16 point lead. Although the Demons fought back well, they were unable to complete the comeback. The Demons should take confidence out of their two performances in Bathurst this season, and look towards the return fixtures for victories.
