Round 6 Recap: Panthers roar to first win of the season
Parkes Panthers are on the board in the 2019 Men’s season after a strong performance against the Bathurst GIANTS. The GIANTS were too good in the corresponding Women’s match, whilst the Rebels accounted for Cowra in Bathurst.

A third convincing win of the season for the GIANTS ladies who albeit with some inaccuracy accounted for the Pantherettes. The GIANTS were excellent defensively, keeping their opponents scoreless, whilst finding 12 scoring shots of their own. Goalkickers Danita Lane (2) and Matilda Flood (1) did the damage in the first half and although no goals were scored after that, the match was all but won. Best players included the GIANTS Danita Lane and Panthers’ Harriet Moore.
Men’s – Parkes Panthers 10.12.72 def Bathurst GIANTS 7.13.55
Every AFL Central West senior side has won a match in 2019 after Parkes’ stunning upset of the GIANTS. Assisted by some strong inclusions, the Panthers went into quarter time trailing however kicked clear in the second and pushed home the advantage after that. Paul Jenkins continued his excellent start to 2019 with 4 goals (17 in 2019), whilst Aaron Halls (4), Joshua Avis and Kai Frame (2) were multiple goal scorers for the Panthers. The victory brings the Panthers one win from the top 4 and off the bottom of the table.
Bathurst Bushrangers vs Cowra Blues, George Park #2
Women’s – Bathurst Bushrangers 12.20.92 def Cowra Blues 0.0.0
Following the defeat in Round 1, the Bushrangers have hit their straps and are charging up the ladder. Another dominant performance for the ladies in teal, this time a 92 point win over the Blues. Although the scoreline was one-sided, there was one glaring positive for the Blues, the strength of numbers. Cowra have grown as a side all season and their recruitment efforts led to running out on George Park with 17 players, their strongest team for the year. Over time, the results will come, but in what is a rebuild for Cowra, this strength is reward for effort so far. Sonia Lang and Alora Dickson booted 3 majors each for the Bushrangers who look to Saturday’s clash with Orange as crucial in their top 2 aspirations.
Men’s – Bathurst Bushrangers Rebels 20.12.132 def Cowra Blues 6.1.37
In a match marred by injuries, the Rebels were simply too strong for the travelling Blues. With 6 multiple goalscorers including Timothy Hunter, Pat Edsall, Mick Phillips and Bill Watterson (3) the Rebels had too much firepower. A 14 goals to 3 first-half set up the win and whilst Cowra fought back in the second half, the Bathurst side were safe. Chris Day (2) continued his run of goals alongside Zachary Brunton (2) who posed a threat for the Rebels defence. With two general byes approaching, Cowra return to Bathurst for a clash with the GIANTS. Whilst for the Rebels, its derby time as they host the Outlaws.
Dubbo Demons vs Orange Tigers, South Dubbo Oval
Men’s – Dubbo Demons 7.10.52 def by Orange Tigers 13.9.87
Orange Tigers have returned to the winners circle with a hard-fought 35 point win away from home. Led by Sandun Welisara and Andrew Nelson (4 goals), the Tigers got out to an early lead and were never threatened. Dubbo had several chances to close the margin but were unable to find targets kicking inside 50 allowing the Tigers to counter-attack. Joshua Anasis found form in front of goals booting 3 majors however did not have the support. The win was crucial for the Tigers who stay level with the Rebels, whilst the Demons stay in 5th, tied with the GIANTS.
