Sir Douglas Nicholls Round – Bathurst Giants

The Bathurst Giants once again will be celebrating Sir Doug Nicholls Round. This season, a Josh Sly designed guernsey will be worn by the club's Senior Men's sides.

The Bathurst Giants will be celebrating Indigenous culture this week holding activities and events at this weekend’s games to commemorate and celebrate the Indigenous players, staff and fans who are involved in AFL.

The Sir Doug Nicholls Round, formerly known as AFL Indigenous Round, is a celebrated Round across the AFL highlighting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contributions to the AFL.

Sir Doug Nicholls Round is a chance to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and acknowledge the contribution of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players, past and present. 

Bathurst Giants will celebrate Indigenous Round over three dates:

AUSKICK: 

  • Wednesday 17 May, 4:00PM 
  • Wiradjuri Country, George Park 1 
  • Traditional Indigenous Games which will be accompanied by some of the senior womens players helping out.

SENIORS: 

  • Saturday 20 May From 10:50am, guernsey/artwork story talk by Artist, Josh Sly
  • Wiradjuri Country, George Park 1
  • Smoking/blessing between Ressies & Women’s 
  • Main Acknowledgement of Country between Women’s & Tier 1 
  • Best on Ground awards will be given for all grades
  • Scrunchiko will be selling Indigenous scrunchies and other scrunchies from their collection in support of Indigenous round.
  • Guernsey (ressies + tier 1) auction at Panthers from 6:30pm. All funds raised go back into the Giants Indigenous development fund

JUNIORS: 

  • Sunday 21 May from 9:30am 
  • Wiradjuri Country, George Park 1
  • Acknowledgement of Country before all games 
  • Best on ground awards for all age groups will be given

Josh Sly is a local Bathurst artist who is designing the special Indigenous guernseys for Bathurst Giants this year. Josh has been involved with GWS Giants and Sydney Swans as well as many NRL Clubs. He has previously played with the Bathurst Giants and his dad is a long term Bathurst Giants club supporter and sponsor.

Money raised from the week the will go into the club’s Indigenous Development Fund. In the last 12 months the Bathurst Giants have purchased sets of AFL jumpers for two local schools to participate in the local Paul Kelly Cup competition.
