Sports NSW has awarded Bathurst Giants the top gong at its annual NSW Community Sport Awards, at a presentation evening at CommBank Stadium, Parramatta, with the Giants being named Community Club of the Year.
The club was recognised for its contribution to community beyond the footy club, particularly in relation to its Indigenous Round celebrations and initiatives to include the First Nations community and raise money for Indigenous causes.
A successful club in AFL Central West’s women’s league, Bathurst Giants also champions International Women’s Day with an annual come and try day to support the continual growth and equity of its women’s program.
Upon accepting the Community Club of the Year award, Bathurst Giants’ President, Kathy Sloan, said: “We’re a minority sport in Bathurst, so we’ve had to work really hard to get community recognition. We’ve had to work hard to create an identity and attract players so we’ve needed a yearly retention strategy.
“Our coaches and our committee and such committed people and they just keep on going. We’re not the biggest club in town and we’re certainly not the biggest sport in town so working with community groups [such as local First Nations groups] is really important.”
Congratulations to Bathurst Giants on being recognised as the 2024 Community Club of the Year by Sport NSW.
